A short history of the Finland Santa letter program

The Santa Claus Main Post Office opened in 1985 at Napapiiri — the point where the Arctic Circle crosses through Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland. Posti, Finland's national postal service, runs it year-round as a working post office with a dedicated Santa branch. It handles letters in over twenty languages and now receives roughly half a million pieces of Santa mail each season.

Finland leans into the Santa-is-Finnish claim hard. Joulupukki, the Finnish Yule Goat figure, evolved over the 20th century into a Santa Claus the rest of the world would recognise — and Rovaniemi marketed itself as his official hometown well before the rest of Lapland could push back.

The post office sits inside Santa Claus Village, a year-round visitor complex that draws over half a million tourists annually.
