What makes this program different

  • Swedish families write to Jultomten — gifts arrive on the evening of December 24 (Julafton), often delivered in person by a family member dressed as the Tomte.
  • Mora in Dalarna is the most famous Tomte town in Sweden — a Tomteland theme park is open year-round and handles seasonal Tomtebrev replies.
  • PostNord runs the national reply service via Tomteboda mail centre — the same address handles deliveries for most of Stockholm county year-round.
  • A handwritten letter on red paper with a child's drawing is the most traditional format — Tomten likes drawings.

While you wait for Santa's reply

Once the letter is mailed, the wait begins. On Christmas Eve, you can watch Santa fly his sleigh through Sweden in real time on our free Santa tracker. It's a privacy-first simulation that runs in your browser, no signup, no tracking — and we've been refining it for years.

A short history of the Sweden Jultomten letter program

Sweden's Jultomte tradition predates Christianity — the tomte was originally a small bearded house spirit who lived in the barn and protected the farm in exchange for a bowl of porridge. Over the 19th century the figure merged with the international Father Christmas, partly thanks to the artist Jenny Nyström, whose 1881 Christmas cards essentially defined the modern Jultomte's red hat and grey beard.

Mora in Dalarna claims the tomte's hometown. Tomteland — Sagolandet Tomteland — opened there in the 1980s as a year-round theme park, and Swedish kids have been writing brev till Tomten to the Mora address ever since. PostNord runs the modern reply service through its Tomteboda mail centre outside Stockholm.

Volume sits in the tens of thousands of letters each season. Replies arrive on illustrated stationery with a Mora postmark, written in Swedish or English depending on the original letter. The Jenny Nyström-style imagery is still the dominant visual — Sweden's Jultomte looks rural, slightly grumpy, and very Swedish.

What kids in Sweden traditionally ask for

  • 🎁Swedish kids ask Jultomten for LEGO, BRIO wooden trains (a Swedish institution since the 1880s), books, and skis. Outdoor gear is normal — Swedish childhood is half spent outside in the snow.
  • 🎁On Lussidagen (December 13, Saint Lucia's Day) kids dress as Lucia or her attendants and bring saffron buns and ginger cookies to their parents at dawn. The whole Christmas season is one long sequence of food traditions.
  • 🎁Swedish Christmas Eve (Julafton) hinges on Donald Duck. Since 1959, families have gathered at 3pm sharp to watch 'Kalle Anka och hans vänner önskar God Jul' on TV — a tradition so dominant that scheduling Christmas dinner around it is normal.
  • 🎁Jultomten often arrives in person on Christmas Eve — typically an uncle in a costume — and asks 'finns det några snälla barn här?' before handing out gifts. Families leave him a bowl of risgrynsgröt and a glass of julmust.
