What makes this program different

  • Spanish children write to Los Reyes Magos (the Three Wise Men: Melchor, Gaspar, Baltasar), not Santa. Gifts arrive on the morning of January 6 — Día de Reyes — not Christmas Day.
  • Correos runs a national Carta a los Reyes Magos service: drop the letter at any post office (free, no stamp) or post a letter addressed to the Kings during late December.
  • Many cities also host a Cabalgata de Reyes parade on the evening of January 5 — kids hand letters directly to the royal pages who march in the procession.
  • Santa Claus (Papá Noel) is gaining ground in modern Spain but the Reyes Magos remain the dominant gift-bringing tradition — especially in Madrid, Andalucía, and Catalonia.

While you wait for Santa's reply

Once the letter is mailed, the wait begins. On Christmas Eve, you can watch Santa fly his sleigh through Spain in real time on our free Santa tracker. It's a privacy-first simulation that runs in your browser, no signup, no tracking — and we've been refining it for years.

A short history of the Spain Los Reyes Magos letter program

Spanish kids have been writing to Los Reyes Magos — Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar — for well over a century. The tradition is rooted in the Epiphany story: the Three Wise Men brought gifts to the infant Jesus on January 6, so Spanish children receive their gifts on the same date as a re-enactment of that journey.

Correos formalised the Carta a los Reyes Magos service in the late 20th century, partly to manage the volume already arriving at Spanish post offices addressed to Sus Majestades. Today every Correos branch accepts Reyes letters during late December, free of postage, and routes them to a national reply team.

The Cabalgata de Reyes on the evening of January 5 is the cultural heart of the whole thing. Every Spanish town and city hosts a parade where actors playing the three kings throw caramelos (sweets) to the kids lining the streets, and royal pages collect last-minute letters handed up directly. Madrid's cabalgata draws over half a million spectators.

What kids in Spain traditionally ask for

  • 🎁Spanish kids leave shoes by the balcony or under the tree on the night of January 5, not stockings. The Reyes Magos fill the shoes — the bigger the shoe, the more they fit, so a parent's shoe is a popular strategic choice.
  • 🎁Wishlists traditionally request one gift per king — three total — though the modern reality often features a main wish from Melchor (the oldest) and smaller wishes from Gaspar and Baltasar. Naughty kids get carbón dulce — sweet coal made of black sugar.
  • 🎁Roscón de Reyes is the January 6 cake — ring-shaped, filled with cream, with a hidden figurine (whoever finds it is king for the day) and a hidden dried bean (whoever finds it has to pay for next year's roscón).
  • 🎁Modern Spain runs a parallel Papá Noel tradition on December 24 — many kids now get a smaller round of gifts from Santa and the main round from the Reyes Magos. Catalan kids also have Tió de Nadal, a smiling log that 'poops' presents when beaten with sticks.
