What makes this program different
- →Drøbak claims the title of "Santa's town" in Norway — home to Tregaardens Julehus, a year-round Christmas house that handles the Julenissen mailbox in partnership with Posten Norge.
- →Norwegian families address letters to "Julenissen" — Norway's version of Father Christmas who delivers gifts on the evening of December 24.
- →Standard Norwegian postage required from within Norway. International senders use normal international postage.
- →If you visit Drøbak in December you can post the letter at the Julehus and stamp it with the official Julenissen postmark.
While you wait for Santa's reply
Once the letter is mailed, the wait begins. On Christmas Eve, you can watch Santa fly his sleigh through Norway in real time on our free Santa tracker. It's a privacy-first simulation that runs in your browser, no signup, no tracking — and we've been refining it for years.
A short history of the Norway Julenissen letter program
Drøbak's claim on Santa goes back to the 1980s when Eva Johansen opened Tregaardens Julehus — a year-round Christmas shop in a converted wooden house on the town's main street. She started answering the Julenissen-addressed letters that began arriving from kids around Norway, and over time the local post office formalised the partnership.
The Julenissen-Drøbak link got an international boost in 1991 when the town twinned with Hiroo in Hokkaido, Japan — making it the first formal sister-city pairing built around the Santa Claus tradition. The link is still active and Drøbak's tourism trades heavily on it.
Posten Norge handles the postal side, with Tregaardens Julehus stamping and replying to letters during November and December. Volume sits in the tens of thousands of letters each season — manageable enough that most kids who write get a personal-feeling reply with the Julenissen postmark.
What kids in Norway traditionally ask for
- 🎁Norwegian kids ask Julenissen for ski equipment (cross-country, almost universally), sleds, ice skates, and outdoor gear. Norwegian childhood is built around being outside in the cold.
- 🎁LEGO, Playmobil, and Norwegian-language books are perennial. Kids also ask for marzipan pigs — a traditional Christmas sweet found on every Norwegian table.
- 🎁Norwegian families leave a bowl of risengrynsgrøt (rice porridge) for the Julenisse — the household elf who lives in the barn and gets cranky if forgotten. Skipping the porridge is considered bad luck. Julenissen and the smaller fjøsnisse are sometimes treated as the same figure, sometimes as cousins.
- 🎁Gifts arrive on the evening of December 24 (Julaften) after dinner — pinnekjøtt or ribbe followed by riskrem with hidden almond. Julenissen often appears in person, knocking at the door in costume.
