A short history of the Norway Julenissen letter program

Drøbak's claim on Santa goes back to the 1980s when Eva Johansen opened Tregaardens Julehus — a year-round Christmas shop in a converted wooden house on the town's main street. She started answering the Julenissen-addressed letters that began arriving from kids around Norway, and over time the local post office formalised the partnership.

The Julenissen-Drøbak link got an international boost in 1991 when the town twinned with Hiroo in Hokkaido, Japan — making it the first formal sister-city pairing built around the Santa Claus tradition. The link is still active and Drøbak's tourism trades heavily on it.

Posten Norge handles the postal side, with Tregaardens Julehus stamping and replying to letters during November and December. Volume sits in the tens of thousands of letters each season — manageable enough that most kids who write get a personal-feeling reply with the Julenissen postmark.

What kids in Norway traditionally ask for

🎁Norwegian kids ask Julenissen for ski equipment (cross-country, almost universally), sleds, ice skates, and outdoor gear. Norwegian childhood is built around being outside in the cold.
🎁LEGO, Playmobil, and Norwegian-language books are perennial. Kids also ask for marzipan pigs — a traditional Christmas sweet found on every Norwegian table.
